Recently, the National Natural Science Foundation of China announced the funding results for the 2025 annual Young Science Fund Project (Category A) and Young Science Fund Project (Category B). The project "Construction of Hydrogenation Catalytic System for Heavy Oil in Fluidized Bed and Reaction Enhancement" submitted by Professor Pan Yuan of our institute has been approved as a Young Science Fund Project (Category B) (formerly the Excellent Young Science Fund Project). This project aims to address the issues of poor dispersion of traditional heavy oil hydrogenation catalysts and the tendency of the system to clog. It intends to conduct research on the construction and design of a new ultra-dispersed colloidal catalytic system and a new fluidized bed hydrogenation cracking process, in order to break through the control of heavy oil macromolecular diffusion and inhibit the clogging of the system. The approval of this national-level talent project signifies that the college has once again achieved significant breakthroughs in the cultivation of young talents and scientific research innovation.

Pan Yuan, professor and doctoral supervisor, has been selected as a distinguished expert by the Taishan Scholars Program (2025) and a Young Talent of Shandong Province (2024). Mainly engaged in research in the fields of energy chemistry and industrial catalysis. In the past five years, as the first author or corresponding author, more than 70 academic papers have been published in journals such as Adv. Mater., Nat. Commun., Energy Environ. Sci., AIChE J., ACS Catal., Sci. Bull., etc., with more than 15,000 citations and an H-index of 58. Has been responsible for over 10 longitudinal research projects including National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Project, Young Project), Shandong Provincial Natural Science Foundation (Outstanding Young Scientist Project, Excellent Young Scientist Project), and Taishan Scholars Program (Distinguished Expert, Young Expert). As the first author, he/she has won 4 scientific and technological awards, including the 2022 Shandong Province Natural Science Award. Received honors such as the 2021 Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Young Scientist Award, the 2023 Clarivate "Global Highly Cited Scientist" award, and the 2024 "Outstanding Editor" award of "Nano Research".Guided students to win the first prize in the 18th "Challenge Cup" National Competition. Currently, I am a member of the Youth Working Committee of the Chinese Chemical Society, a member of the Youth Working Committee of the Chinese Renewable Energy Society, a member of the Sixth Catalysis Professional Committee of the Shandong Chemical and Chemical Engineering Society, and a young editor for journals such as "Nano Research".

The Youth Science Foundation Project (Category B) supports young scholars who have already achieved good results in basic research. It focuses on the world's scientific frontiers and the country's major needs, strengthens the formulation of scientific problems, independently selects research directions to carry out innovative research, promotes the rapid growth of young scientific and technological talents, and cultivates a group of outstanding academic backbone members who are expected to enter the world's scientific frontiers. To continuously deepen the reform of the scientific research talent projects and ensure their healthy development, starting from 2025, the National Natural Science Foundation of China will rename the Outstanding Young Science Fund Project as the Young Science Fund Project (Category B).
