Huayun Lecture Series (Episode 23)

On May 7, the 23rd "Huayun Lecture Hall" was held in Conference Room 121, Block A of the Engineering Building. The college invited Wang Qiaoran, an alumnus from the Class of 1999 of the Chemical Engineering and Technology program and a senior reporter at China Petroleum News, to deliver a thematic lecture for student journalists of the college. Zhang Yongning, Secretary of the College Party Committee, and Xu Guanghui, Deputy Secretary of the College Party Committee, attended the lecture.

Wang Qiaoran fondly recalled her academic years at the college, expressing gratitude for its nurturing environment. During the day’s exchange session, she said she deeply felt the enduring legacy passed down through generations of journalism professionals from the College of Chemistry. She shared her work experiences covering projects such as the desert highway greening initiative, fuel quality upgrades, and the catalyst project in Changting, Fujian. She emphasized that the petroleum and petrochemical industry is a vital pillar of the national economy, people’s livelihoods, and energy security, underscoring journalists’ mission to uphold social responsibility. She advised the student journalists in attendance to hone their observational skills, think critically, actively study high-quality news reports, leverage their disciplinary expertise, and continually refine their writing abilities when uncovering leads and crafting stories.

During the Q&A session, Wang Qiaoran offered professional advice to student reporters on how to identify news leads and enhance their writing skills.

Zhang Yongning expressed gratitude for Wang Qiaoran's insightful presentation and offered three recommendations to the student journalist: First, one Master professional knowledge to enhance industry insight during interviews and reporting, which will help refine career development plans. Second, one Develop problem-solving acumen by thoroughly exploring the deeper significance behind news leads, thereby continuously improving the ability to produce high-quality news reports. Third,to actively engage with current hotspots and future trends, contributing to promoting a positive image of the chemical industry and highlighting its constructive role, thereby leveraging the social value of news and publicity work.

The " Huayun Lecture Series " is a brand of Party building education carried out by the college's Party committee. Through inviting experts from various fields such as politics, industry, science and technology to give keynote speeches to students and faculty, and organizing exchanges and discussions, it helps students deepen their understanding and recognition of the industry and their major, meeting their inherent needs for growth and development. It is a new model for the college to fulfill the fundamental task of fostering virtue and promoting value guidance and the effectiveness of course-based ideological and political education. The "Hua Yun Lecture Hall" has launched 23 sessions so far, with themes covering trends in the chemical industry, the cultivation of innovative consciousness, the development of international perspectives, and the transformation of refining and chemical enterprises, etc. It has formed an effective supplement to professional education.
